Expansion batteries: what an extra battery for a power station actually does
An extra battery for a power station is the cheapest-sounding fix for the wrong problem about half the time. It buys hours, it does not buy watts, and the pack you buy has to be the exact one your station was built for.
An expansion battery is a second pack of cells that plugs into a dedicated port on a power station. It adds stored energy and nothing else: the inverter stays in the station, so continuous and peak watts do not change, and a load that will not start today will not start with a pack attached. It beats buying a bigger station when the box you own already has the output you need and only runs out of hours, and it loses when the problem was the appliance that tripped it. The one rule that matters: packs are model-specific and cable-specific. Verify the exact regional model and the cable before you buy.
How expansion works, and what it does not change
An expansion battery is a box of cells with no inverter and no outlets of its own. It connects to a dedicated port on the host station, which EcoFlow calls the extra battery port and Anker and Jackery call the expansion battery port, and from then on the station treats those cells as part of its own tank. You do not plug appliances into the pack. Everything still runs from the station's sockets, through the station's inverter.
So what changes is the hours, and what does not change is the watts. The inverter that turns stored energy into mains voltage lives in the station, and a pack does not touch it: continuous output and peak output stay exactly where they were. If a compressor trips your station today, it will trip it with two packs bolted on.
That one sentence settles most of these purchases. A pack is the right answer when the station ran out overnight. It is the wrong answer when the station would not start the appliance.
Which of the stations we recommend expand, and to what
This is every station in our roster set against what its own maker documents. Read two columns carefully. The capacity column is blank more often than you would expect, because several makers name the pack without publishing its watt-hours anywhere we could capture. The last column is our record of whether we have a verified retail listing for that pack at all, not a judgement on the pack: only the BP3800, the BP2000 Gen 2 and the DELTA Pro 3 Extra Battery have one.
Jackery is the outlier at the small end. Its FAQ says the Explorer 1000 v2 does not support battery packs, and on the Explorer 2000 v2 the maker is blunter still: not expandable, and if expandable capacity is what you want, look at the Solar Generator 2000 Plus line instead. At the large end the Explorer 5000 Plus takes up to five packs through dedicated AC and DC expansion ports.

The arithmetic: what a pack is actually worth
We plan on 85 percent of nameplate as usable energy unless a maker publishes a usable figure. The home-backup plan here, a fridge plus Wi-Fi, lights and phones for 24 hours, needs 918 Wh to 10,416 Wh depending mostly on the fridge. Three days needs 2,754 Wh to 31,248 Wh.
A C1000 alone holds 1,056 Wh, about 897 Wh usable, a whisker under the easy end of the one-day plan. Its single BP1000 takes the pair to 2,112 Wh, about 1,795 Wh usable: twice the easy end, nowhere near the hard end.
A DELTA Pro 3 carrying both of its 4,096 Wh packs holds 12,288 Wh, about 10,444 Wh usable, against a worst case of 10,416 Wh. It is the only combination in the table that covers the hard end of one day, and it covers it by 28 Wh, which is not a margin anyone should plan on.
An F3800 with all six BP3800 packs holds 26,880 Wh, about 22,848 Wh usable: past the 2,754 Wh floor of the three-day plan, still short of its 31,248 Wh ceiling. Anker's page describes up to 26.88 kWh of added capacity, but six packs at 3.84 kWh each is 23.04 kWh, so the bigger figure appears to count the station's own battery. We use the smaller one.
The catch list
All of this comes from the makers' own documents or our purchase record.
- Packs are matched to one host, and nothing crosses brands: BP1000 to the C1000, BP2000 Gen 2 to the C2000 Gen 2, BP3800 to the F3800, the Battery Pack 5000 Plus to the Explorer 5000 Plus.
- The model number is often missing from the page selling it. Neither Anker's C1000 page nor its F3800 page states one; we took the BP3800 name from the user guide. Confirm the exact regional model before you pay.
- The cable is part of the fit. The DELTA 3 Plus uses an XT150 connector, and our DELTA Pro 3 and BP2000 Gen 2 records both say to confirm the regional model and the approved cable path before purchase.
- On EcoFlow the pack competes for its port: the DELTA 3 Plus extra battery port is also the DC input for alternator chargers, smart generators and microinverters, and the DELTA 3 Ultra Plus port accepts a Smart Generator too.
- A pack needs room. Jackery's Explorer 5000 Plus manual requires at least 200 mm of clearance between the main unit and a battery pack.
- Expanding an F3800 toward whole-home use is an installation job. The Home Power Panel and transfer equipment require qualified installation, which means a licensed electrician.
When to buy a second station instead
Buy the pack when the station you own already has the output you need and simply runs out of hours. Buy a second station when what went wrong was a load that would not start, or a second room that needed power at the same time. A pack has no inverter; a second station brings its own, so of the two it is the only one that raises what you can run at once.
Buy a second station when the maker has closed the door. Jackery states that the Explorer 1000 v2 does not support battery packs and that the Explorer 2000 v2 is not expandable, so for those two there is no pack to buy, and Jackery's own answer is to move to the Solar Generator 2000 Plus line if expandable capacity is the point.
And buy a second station if the port is already spoken for. On the DELTA 3 Plus and the DELTA 3 Ultra Plus, the extra battery port is also how a smart generator or an alternator charger feeds the station. If your plan past day one is a refill rather than a bigger tank, a pack takes the socket that plan needs.
Questions people ask
Will an expansion battery let me run something bigger?
No. The pack adds stored energy only. The inverter stays in the station and its continuous and peak watts are identical with a pack attached, so a load that will not start today will not start afterwards. Capacity and output are two different problems and a pack only solves one of them.
Can I use an expansion battery from a different model, or a different brand?
Assume not, then check. Each pack is matched to a host, and nothing crosses brands. There is some family compatibility inside EcoFlow: the DELTA Pro 3's extra battery port is backwards compatible with the older DELTA Pro Smart Extra Battery, and our record lists the DELTA 2, DELTA 2 Max, DELTA 3 and DELTA Pro 3 extra batteries as fitting the DELTA 3 Plus. Verify against the current regional manual before you buy.
How many expansion batteries can I add?
It depends on the station. One on the Anker SOLIX C1000, which doubles it to 2,112 Wh. Two on the EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max, for up to 6,144 Wh total, and two on the DELTA Pro 3, each of those 4,096 Wh. Up to five on the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus. Up to six on the Anker SOLIX F3800, at 3.84 kWh each.
Is my Jackery expandable?
The Explorer 1000 v2 is not: Jackery's FAQ says battery packs are not supported. The Explorer 2000 v2 is not either, and Jackery points buyers who want expandable capacity at its Solar Generator 2000 Plus line instead. The Explorer 5000 Plus is, taking up to five Battery Pack 5000 Plus units through dedicated AC and DC expansion ports.
How much of the pack can I actually use?
We plan on 85 percent of nameplate unless the maker publishes a usable figure. So a 4,096 Wh DELTA Pro 3 pack is about 3,481 Wh of real energy and a 3.84 kWh BP3800 is about 3,264 Wh. Size your outage against those numbers, not against the figure on the box.
